Regenerative Organic Farm
Splendor Valley Farms Utah is a regenerative organic farm located in Summit County, Utah, dedicated to growing healthful food through certified organic and regenerative farming techniques, distributing the food through CSAs, private chefs and restaurants, in addition to providing education, work opportunities and food services. Our organic and regenerative farming, operations, products, uses and activities are related to modern, sustainable farming in every way.
Splendor Valley Farms Utah has every intention of being a state-of-the-art regenerative organic farm, not only for the crops that are produced organically but also are grown, handled and sold with the health of people and the planet in mind. Splendor Valley Farms Utah intends to follow intrepid practices by extending the growing season in both directions beyond what is typically seen in the short growing season in Summit County. By stretching the growth in both seasonal directions, we expect to be able to produce a large variety of unconventional crops. In addition, with the techniques we intend to use, we will outsmart squash bugs, flea beetles and cabbage worms and even much larger pests, like the deer who visit daily.
Our local restaurants and resorts place a high value on locally generated produce, and we are becoming a preferred provider. Splendor Valley Farms Utah has even made it to be named on the menu of one of the higher end mountain resorts.
Enjoy Your Park City farm stay, and if you come during the right time in the growing season, supplement your dinners with organically, locally farmed produce you can pick right from our farm for your own personal consumption.
The term regenerative organic was coined by J.I. Rodale, a pioneer of organic agriculture in the U.S. It refers to a holistic approach to agriculture that works in harmony with nature to enrich the soil. Soil is a living membrane. It is a living ecosystem, it is incredibly complex and vibrant. Organic farming is a vision for working and living in harmony with nature. The result is healthy soil, which grows healthy plants, which makes for healthy people. Organic farming relies on natural principles like biodiversity and composting to produce healthy, abundant food. Organic systems change our food system for the better.
Splendor Valley Farms Utah intends to use modern regenerative farming techniques, including the use of greenhouses, to extend the growing season earlier into the spring and later into the fall. We expect to use modern techniques for water conservation and land use. Our tools consist of a variety of cover materials, efficient irrigation systems, cold-frame greenhouses, caterpillar tunnels, a wash pack and walk-in coolers. We intend to receive organic farming certifications. Splendor Valley Farms Utah intends to be qualified under the Utah Farmland Assessment Act (A.K.A. Greenbelt Act).
Soil Health
Soil health means the use of regenerative practices like cover crops, crop rotation and conservation tillage to build organic matter and promote biodiversity with no synthetic inputs. Organic systems improve and build the soil over time.
Water
Our water provider is Boulderville Ditch Company, which comes mainly from the Weber River. We recently received permission from The State of Utah Division of Water Rights to store water in an evacuation pond.
Certification
There are a number of organizations that provide certifications for organic farming, including the United States Department of Agriculture ("USDA"). The process for organic certification is four-fold: develop an organic system plan to comply with USDA organic standards, implement the plan, receive an inspection from an accredited agent and receive a decision that the farm is in compliance, receive an organic certificate and officially market products as USDA-Certified Organic. We will seek certification as soon as we harvest our first crops.
Grants
The USDA supports a number of programs to provide assistance to farmers. The USDA provides assistance to farmers through grants, loans and other incentives. Programs focus on conservation, access to capital, risk mitigation and operational recovery from natural disasters. Other government agencies and private entities provide assistance through grants and professional advisory services. Programs include grants for climate change, covid, water pollution, composting and cover crops. Splendor Valley Farms intends to make full use of all assistance available through any channel.
Research
Utah boasts a number of first-class universities that specialize in all aspects of agriculture. Locally there are Brigham Young University, Utah Valley University, University of Utah and Utah State University. Each specializes in an aspect of agriculture that will be helpful to Splendor Valley Farms, such as crops and methods for colder climates with short growing seasons. In addition to developing relationships with their AG departments to test state-of-the-art techniques, we intend to allocate a portion of the acreage under cultivation to university research.
